What the Bundestag's rules say about bags, what happens at security, the October 2026 dome closures, and the nearest station lockers.
You can't take a suitcase up to the Reichstag dome, and there's nowhere to leave one at the building. The Bundestag says large pieces of luggage may not be taken into the Reichstag Building for security reasons, and that no storage is available on site. Leave your case in a Deutsche Bahn locker at Hauptbahnhof or Potsdamer Platz, or with your hotel, before you walk over.
Only small ones. The Bundestag's visitor information rules out large luggage without giving an exact size, so a cabin trolley or a big travel backpack is the kind of thing that gets turned away.
The Bundestag's house rules add a detail worth knowing. Visitors have to hand in coats, umbrellas, cases and bags, recording devices and binoculars at the cloakroom before entering. Handbags are the exception, as long as they've been through the security check.
Because there's no published size limit, the safest plan is to arrive with nothing bigger than a small shoulder bag.
There are cloakrooms on the visitors' level, but they're for coats and everyday items, not luggage. The Bundestag says plainly that no storage facilities are available on site, so don't count on security holding a suitcase for you while you visit the dome.
Expect an airport-style check. Bags, coats and other items go through an X-ray machine, and visitors walk through a metal detector in the entrance area. Weapons, knives, explosives and dangerous tools are banned under the house rules.
Everyone aged 16 or over needs a valid official photo ID, such as an identity card or passport. Copies aren't accepted, so bring the original.
Not all month. The Bundestag lists two maintenance closures for the dome this autumn. The roof terrace stays open during both, so you still get the view over the government district.
A visit to the roof terrace and dome is free, but you must register in advance with the names and dates of birth of everyone in your group.
Sometimes. The service centre on Platz der Republik, in front of the Reichstag, takes walk-in registrations if places are left, but your confirmation has to be issued at least two hours before your visit. On weekends the service centre opens from 10:00 to 18:00.
That two-hour gap is where luggage becomes a problem. If you register on the spot, you'll be wandering the Tiergarten with your bags until your slot, so drop them first.
At a Deutsche Bahn station locker a short ride or walk away. The Bundestag names Hauptbahnhof, Friedrichstraße and Unter den Linden as stations within walking distance, and the 100 and M41 buses stop at Reichstag/Bundestag.
Check your case against the large locker size before you set out. The current price for each size is on the station's Deutsche Bahn locker page, and it's worth carrying enough coins since the machines don't take cards.
Ask your hotel or host whether they'll keep your bags after checkout, and ask the day before. A morning or late-afternoon dome slot on your departure day then works well: visit with a light bag, collect your luggage, and head to the train or airport.
Keeper is building pay-per-minute luggage storage in Berlin.
No. The German Bundestag says large pieces of luggage may not be taken into the Reichstag Building for security reasons, and there is no storage on site. Leave your suitcase at a station locker, for example at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, or with your hotel.
No. The Bundestag states that no storage facilities are available on site. The cloakrooms on the visitors' level are for coats and small items, not suitcases.
Berlin Hauptbahnhof, within walking distance of the Reichstag, has Deutsche Bahn coin lockers in two sizes, the larger measuring 44 × 61 × 93 cm. Potsdamer Platz and Friedrichstraße stations also have coin lockers for up to 24 hours.
Partly. The Bundestag lists maintenance closures of the dome from 28 September to 2 October 2026 and from 19 to 30 October 2026. The roof terrace stays open to registered visitors during both closures.
Not yet. Keeper hasn't opened a locker and has no location at the Reichstag. For now, use a Deutsche Bahn locker at Hauptbahnhof or Potsdamer Platz, or ask your hotel or host to keep your bags.
